Often after graduation there is a period of purposelessness and overwhelm before taking the reigns of adulthood.
To honor this rite-of-passage, Explorations Academy offers a Gap program–a journey marking this important developmental transition.
Participants experience an increased level of autonomy on these expeditions but still have the access, support, guidance, and advice of an Explorations Academy Staff Member. This less formal and more personal mentorship is a natural extension of the advising relationships we cultivate with our students. These trips are both a challenge to and celebration of each student as they live into their identity as an adult in a dynamic and changing world.
2017-2018 Gap Program
Camino de Santiago “Gap” Experience
Recent high school graduates are invited to walk across Spain on the ancient pilgrimage route of the Camino de Santiago. Participants will trek over 500 miles from the city of Irún to Santiago de Compostela on the Camino del Norte and the Camino Primitivo. Along the way, participants will practice Spanish, eat amazing food, and learn the history of this ancient route from an experienced guide walking with them on every step of the journey. In addition, we will discuss pilgrimage as a metaphor for the transition into adulthood. The fall 2017 trip will begin on September 26th, with an expected arrival in Santiago on November 1st and the optional extension to Finisterra finishing on November 5th.
This trip will be led by Bacchus Taylor. Bacchus has completed three pilgrimages on three different routes along the Camino de Santiago. He has also completed the Pacific Crest Trail and walked across Iceland in the last two years. Previous to that, he led countless wilderness expeditions for both adolescents and adults in remote settings and taught at Explorations Academy for eight years. He is endorsed to teach Spanish and is excited to be sharing his love of the Spanish culture and food over more than a month of hiking across some of the most amazing terrain on earth.
Priority deadline: June 2nd.
