International Expeditions

2017 International Expedition Blog

Explorations Academy is unlike any other independent school in the Pacific Northwest. Our fully accredited high school has served students of Whatcom and Skagit counties for over 20 years. Rooted in experiential, field-based learning, our program provides students with opportunities to explore diverse subject matter, build positive relationships with peers and adults, and engage with the world around them in meaningful ways. Our main campus is nestled between the Salish Sea and the wild North Cascades in beautiful Bellingham, WA, and our field programs include urban and backcountry settings on five continents.

International study and service expeditions further underscore our belief that global citizenship is a central part of a 21st Century education. On these month-long expeditions, students gain first-hand experience with other cultures, faiths, and world-views, not just as travelers but also as volunteer participants in the society they are visiting, often building lasting friendships with those met abroad. They gain in character as well as intellect, building flexibility, resilience, compassion, creativity, and maturity. Some destinations Explorations Academy students and faculty have studied include; India, Peru, Nicaragua, Colombia, Indonesia, Kenya, Ireland, Thailand, Cuba, and Guatemala.

International Trip Fundraising:

fundraising thermometerWhile we have always relied upon student-driven fundraisers in the budget for our international trips, this once in a lifetime opportunity would not be possible without your support. You can learn more about our exciting 2017 Mesoamerica trip here: International Trip Overview.
All students are expected to participate in fundraising.
We explicitly include these activities for three reasons:

  1. to facilitate group development amongst kids and leaders prior to the trip;
  2. to increase student commitment in their learning;
  3. to make it more affordable for all families.

We invite you to participate in our fundraising efforts as we prepare to send our next group of students international:

Messages from Mesoamerica

We invite you to be a part of this work and share in our adventures! These incredible learning opportunities would not be possible without your generous support. In gratitude, we look forward sharing stories and details from our adventures with you via a personal postcard from Central America!
